The two most beautiful islands I have ever cruised to have to be Bermuda and the Bahamas. They are so shockingly beautiful that you will always want to go back for more. They have many similarities, but they also have many differences. I’m going to provide descriptions of both, and then you can decide which one appeals to you the most!
Similarities:
Both Bermuda and the Bahamas are perfect for those that love the beach and those who love water sports. There are so many activities on each island, including sailing, snorkeling, jet skiing, diving, or simply tanning by the water.
Both islands also have many resorts that host many international visitors. The Bahamas is well known for the Atlantis, and Bermuda is well known for the Elbow Beach Resort. Both islands also have ports for cruises to dock at for the duration of their stay.
It is very easy to find cruises to both of these islands. Bermuda is so close to the East Coast, so cruise lines are able to send ships there from Boston, New York, New Jersey, Baltimore and Norfolk. They even depart from Port Canaveral in Florida. On the other hand, the Bahamas is very close to Miami, making it easy to travel there from any of the Florida ports, as well as Charleston and other East Coast cities.
Also, since both islands are/were British territories, you drive on the left in both islands, just like in England.
Differences:
Bermuda
Because of its location, Bermuda cruising season is much more limited. Even though ships begin sailing there in mid-April and run through around mid-November, it is definitely colder there in the early spring and late fall.
Cruises seem to always stay in King’s Wharf, Bermuda for a full three days. This is nice because you truly get enough time to experience everything that the island has to offer without the fear of missing out on anything important.
If you prefer land activities over water activities, you will find more to do in Bermuda. Golfing is very popular here. St. George’s is full of cobblestoned streets and beautiful colonial buildings, and King’s Wharf is known for its naval history. You can’t forget to visit Front Street for their amazing shops and island-life.
Bermuda is also known for its classiness and safety. The locals in Bermuda do not beg the tourists for money, for it is a very pristine island. You can only buy property there if you know the right people.
However, Bermuda is quiet in the evening and night life is much more rare there than in the Bahamas.
The Bahamas
The Bahamas stays warm year-round. This means that cruises are able to sail there at any time of the year.
However, cruise ships tend to stay in different parts of the Bahamas. They usually stop in Nassau or Freeport before they head off to the ship’s private island. The Bahamas has historical sights including Fort Charlotte in Nassau and the changing of the guard every other week at the Government House. Beach activities, though, seem to win over historical venues.
You need to be careful when traveling in the Bahamas. The streets are filled with locals begging the tourists for money. It is much safer to stay on parts of the island where many tourists go so that you are not alone with a bunch of locals.
However, the Bahamas has fantastic night life and there are so many fun activities for everyone! Make sure to check that out!
Whether you decide to visit Bermuda or the Bahamas, you will be visiting a beautiful island that offers so much to do and see! Here’s an idea: why not travel to both and see for yourself?
XOXO,
Have Some Wanderlust
