When I think of Alaska, I think of cold weather. Even though that may be true, that doesn’t mean that it is not beautiful! If you’re looking for a vacation that is not your average Caribbean destination, give Alaska a try. You might just fall in love with it!
What to Pack
Yes, Alaska can get very cold. The temperatures in the spring to the fall range from 50-70 degrees. That’s kind of cold for me, especially in the summer months. You will definitely want to dress in layers so that you can add or takeaway layers as needed. First you will need the inner layer, which includes something that will absorb the moisture from your body. This could be anything, but most likely an active-wear top. Next, you will need the insulating layer, which includes a fleece or a sweater. From there, you’ll need the outer layer. This means your coat, which should be heavy enough to keep you warm, but also waterproof to keep you dry in case it rains. You will also need either sneakers or hiking boots because Alaska is known for hiking and exploring the great outdoors. Of course, don’t forget your hat, gloves, scarves, and sunscreen!
Places to Eat
The Little Mermaid
Address: 4246 Homer Spit Road, Homer, AK 99603.
I have heard that this restaurant is extremely small, but have amazing food! They use local fresh ingredients in all of their dishes, which includes their different pizza options and and array of desserts. You really can’t go wrong here, as it is very close to the Homer Harbor! The name of the restaurant itself is even fun!
Tracy’s King Crab Shack
Address: 432 South Franklin Street, Juneau, AK 99801.
This restaurant is one of the most well-known in Alaska. Besides, who has never heard of Alaskan king crab? This restaurant is on the waterfront and looks like a tiny shack. They sell crab legs, bisque, different cakes and of course, seafood bites. Everything is locally caught, so you’re guaranteed freshness!
Varly’s Swiftwater Seafood Café
Address: Harbor Road, Whittier, AK 99693.
This restaurant is on the beachfront, which offers beautiful views! They offer amazing fish and chips, which are always served fresh! They also serve different chowders, salads, and many other types of delicious, fresh food!
Things to Do
Kroschel Films Wildlife Center
Address: Mile 18 Mosquito Lake Road, Haines, AK 99827.
This is the place to be if you love wildlife and if you love photography! This is where Steve Kroschel, a filmmaker and naturalist, takes care of different abandoned or orphaned wild animals that are in need of a home. The animals, including foxes, wolves, reindeer, grizzly bears, and more, are allowed to rome free as if they are in their natural environment. It is very easy to take stunning pictures of these animals and the trails that show the breathtaking Alaskan wilderness.
Juneau Whale Watch
Address: 76 Egan Dr Suite 300, Juneau, AK 99801.
If you love wildlife, Alaska really is the place to visit. The water is beautiful, but seeing whales emerge from the water is even more beautiful. You can witness this at Juneau Whale Watch, which is the local company there. This adventure takes about three to five hours where it starts on a bus and then you board a whale watching boat. Yes, you will see many whales include humpbacks and orcas, but you might also see bald eagles, black bears, sea lions, and many others. At one point, the captain will even shut off the engine so that the whales can approach the boat. Talk about a perfect picture!
The Aurora Ice Museum
Address: 17600 Chena Hot Springs Road, Fairbanks, AK 99712.
This is located in the Chena Hot Springs Resort and is open year-round! This museum is made up of over 1,000 tons of ice and snow, so it is kept at 25 degrees Fahrenheit. You will definitely need a parka, which they loan to their visitors so that they can enjoy the experience. The museum has different ice sculptures and an observation tower. It also has three bedrooms, which include a polar bear room, a Christmas room, and a children’s fort. They also have a Northern Lights room and an ice outhouse. There is even an ice alter that can be rented for weddings and other special events. This is definitely a place to put on your list!
If you love the outdoors and being adventurous, an amazing Alaskan vacation is definitely for you! Give it a try and branch out of your comfort zone!
XOXO,
Have Some Wanderlust
